Nancy Drew Movie 2007 Funny Clips Hospital Scene
Nancy Drew season 1, episode 13, "The Whisper Box," just finished airing. Check out our review to see what happened after last week's cliffhanger!
This week, the story is pretty straightforward: In one reality, Nancy is caught in a perfect world where everyone is happy and likes her. In another reality, the true reality, Nancy is stuck in the Whisper Box while her friends try to save her.
Throughout the episode, we jump back and forth between these two realities as Nancy tries to save herself with the help of her friends while the real versions of her friends fight the being who's haunting the Larkspur mental hospital.
This is a fun episode that allows many of our main characters to play alternate versions of themselves. While Nancy is basically the same in both worlds, her interactions with George, Nick, Ace, Bess, Ryan, and others are completely different.
Not only was "The Whisper Box" an interesting and creative episode, it also gave us our biggest clue yet.
'Nancy Drew' season 1, episode 13 review
Nancy Drew's perfect day
When we last left Nancy, she passed out in the Whisper Box and woke up in a world where her mother was still alive. At the start of this episode, we find out just how weird this reality is.
Nancy is home from college, her mom is alive, her father is volunteering too much, and Nancy is actually allowed to work a mystery without everyone telling her to keep her nose out of everyone's business.
She meets up with Ned, who definitely doesn't know her but is still very, very attracted to her, and all her friends come by to visit — George, who hugs now; Ace, who is pretty much the same (why??); and Bess, who is an Instagram influencer but still lives out of her van.
It doesn't take Nancy's sharp mind long to realize something is wrong: a fire alarm goes off even though there's no smoke, she's not wearing her necklace, and there are cockroaches in the restaurant. Oh, and everyone is happy, there's no murder, there are no ghosts, and all her friends like her.
Yeah, definitely an alternate reality.
Nancy's first instinct is to return to the Larkspur mental institution, but her friends say it doesn't exist. Oddly enough, however, Nick tells her the address of the sanatorium is the same address as the house he just bought. The house he thinks is haunted.
Nancy figures out pretty quickly that, mostly, the house is just old. However, when they get up to the attic, she finds the Whisper Box's door and figures if she can get it open, she can escape this reality.
However, there's a figure under a blue sheet that tries to attack her and leaves a burn mark on the floor. It's in the shape of a flower — the same symbol that was on the keycard hidden in the Bible from Nancy Drew season 1, episode 12.
Nick tells Nancy that Ryan Hudson sold him the house, so the duo head to the police station to talk to him. Tiffany is also alive in this reality, and the pair of them are creating a center for at-risk youth. This exasperates Nancy, but I like the idea of a reality in which Ryan and Tiffany are working together to make the world a better place.
Ryan tells them that the only person who has the key to that room is Nancy, but she made him hide it and leave a series of clues just in case she needed to find it. Nancy's continued exasperation gave me life during this episode, and I love how easily the writers found that line that should make this concept ridiculous and just…never crossed it. Major kudos.
As Nancy leaves the precinct, there is a pair of curtains with the same pattern as the sheets. Nancy is brave enough to open them, but there's nothing but a clear sky on the other side. That is, until a burned hand reaches through and tries to grab her. Another symbol is left behind.
Back home, Nancy's mom calls the doctor, but the results are negative. She's not sick! You can tell on Nancy's face that she was expecting this. It was all she ever wanted, but there's a bittersweet aftertaste. She knows this world isn't real, and it will never be real, no matter how good it feels to live inside it.
Nick shows up to join Nancy at the cemetery, which is the only place where the aforementioned clues could be located. It's pouring rain, and the two of them decide to wait it out. It gives them a chance to talk about their relationship in the other reality — the one where he dumped her.
I love this scene in Nancy Drew season 1, episode 13 so much because we get to see the Nick we met at the beginning of the season. He can't believe he'd break up with her in any reality, and that giddy, enthusiastic, sexy version of Nick is something I've really missed. And, so it seems, has Nancy.
I know this wasn't real, but the chemistry these two have together (which, I honestly think has gotten a lot stronger since the first few episodes) is proof enough to me that these characters should give their relationship another shot. That's not too much to ask, right?
The two of them sleep together, and Nancy only wakes up when an envelope falls on her. It has messages from her friends who are in the real world trying to wake her up. She squeezes one of them, which translates to Nancy squeezing Bess' hand.
The messages are all Nancy needs to get her ass in gear. She gathers her fake-reality friends and together they figure out the clues that lead to the hollow oak that has the key inside. The figure from before tries one last time to grab onto Nancy, but it doesn't succeed.
Back in the attic, Nancy must say goodbye. This was a sweet scene because you can tell how difficult it is for her to give up a perfect life. As she says herself, everything is messy back home, and it feels so much simpler to stay in this reality where everyone likes her, where she can be with Nick, where her mom is still alive.
But it's not real.
I love that Nancy knows this is the easy option, but not the right one. Her other life is a disaster in comparison, but it's still her life, and she has to live with the consequences of her actions. So, Nancy ventures through the door and finds…an empty room. There's nothing of importance on the other side, let alone her own reality.
Back home, Nancy's mom tries to get her to stay. I was worried this would turn into a nightmare scenario because I was getting serious Coraline vibes, but I'm so glad the show never took it there. It would've ruined the sweet moment between them later on, and this episode also didn't need any more jump-scares!
Nancy figures out the blue envelopes were a clue to the map her mother drew of heaven when she was little. When Nick puts some holy water on her in their reality, it helps her find the map in this dream world. The map was actually a drawing of the swan constellation, and the stars on her ceiling lead her to her closet door, which is the real way home.
I'm going to pause here for a moment because I just want to give even more credit to the writers for clues like the blue envelope. That map was mentioned a couple episodes ago, and yet it came back into play during Nancy Drew season 1, episode 13. These kinds of connections are essential for a series this, and I'm glad the creative team behind the show are leaning into them more and more.
Nancy's abilities aren't supernatural; they're all about observation and making logical connections. It's great that, as a series, Nancy Drew can let us in on that same action.
Right before Nancy leaves, her mom tries one more time to get her to stay. It doesn't feel like the Whisper Box spirit trying to keep her from leaving. Instead, it's like Nancy's own mind is trying to convince her that there's nothing wrong in wanting to live in this reality.
But, again, Nancy knows better. Her mom taught her to always seek out the truth, even when it hurts. "I am who I am because of you. Thank you," Nancy says. And then she actually gets to say goodbye.
That's when the closet door opens and Nancy wakes up in the real world.
Nancy Drew's reality
We'll need to rewind a little bit here because even though Nancy Drew season 1, episode 13 starts off with Nancy in her perfect world, the episode does cut back and form between realities so we know what's going on in the real world while Nancy is lying unconscious on the floor.
Nick and George's not-an-orderly buddy tells them that Father "He Spritzed Everywhere" Shane could provide them with holy water so the whole lot of them would be able to go into the Whisper Box and survive.
Ace and Bess track down the priest, who doesn't allow them to look at his face and warns them that the church won't allow him back into the mental hospital. The way he sneaks into and out of the car is certainly suspicious, and I'm still not sure if it was for comedic purposes or if there's something else going on with the priest.
Either way, I hope we see him (or just his silhouette) again.
The whole group sneaks into the Whisper Box and rubs the holy water on themselves like cologne in order to resist the effects of the supernatural entity. They try to take Nancy out of the room, but she starts foaming at the mouth. It looks like they'll have to wake her up first.
While Nick, George, and the not-an-orderly try to find some medical equipment to keep her stable, Ace encourages Bess to talk to Nancy like she talked to him while he was in a coma. He puts Bess' hand in Nancy's, and Bess goes on to speak directly to her friend.
This scene honestly brought me to tears. This group hasn't been a group for very long, but they've become fast friends. And even though it gets rocky, they all care about each other so deeply. Seeing Bess so concerned for her friend warmed my heart, and made me happy that Nancy has this type of support system.
The group argues about whether to use the medical equipment on Nancy, but Bess makes a valid point that they don't know how to use it or how it'll react to the supernatural elements affecting Nancy. Instead, Nick pours a little holy water on her, which allows her to find the escape and wake up.
Nancy: "Are you guys real?"
George: "What kind of dumbass question is that?"
Nancy: "Yeah, you're real."
The group escapes the Whisper Box and learns that the mental hospital exploded thanks to a gas leak. It can't be saved, and though there seems to be the lingering question as to whether or not they're actually free of the evil entity they were fighting, everyone just seems glad that they're all alive.
Nancy tells all her friends what they were like in the alternate reality (I still want to know why Ace was the same), but when she gets to Nick, she doesn't get a chance to tell him what happened between them. George calls him away to deal with restaurant stuff.
"Dorothy never had to deal with an ex," Nancy tells Ace.
When Nancy arrives home, she finds her father on house arrest. I have no idea how she didn't burst into tears right then and there, but Nancy Drew is a stronger person than I am. Instead, the two sit on the stairs and figure out what they should do while they wait for the trial to start.
Nancy suggest Carson volunteer at the historical society, per her experience with his alternate version, and Carson reminisces about how the two of them used to go there all the time as a kid. He pulls up a picture of the sign on his phone, and Nancy immediately makes an important connection.
It turns out that the flower symbol she kept seeing was actually made up of parts of the historical society logo — an anchor, a square and six horseshoes. When she arrives, she finds the house with the curtains that Nick had bought in the other reality.
The owner is Hannah Gruen. In the book series, she's the Drew family housekeeper and cook, but here, she's actually in charge of the historical society. What's more, she's also a keeper of secrets and lock boxes — like the one belonging to Tiffany Hudson.
Nancy gasps when she sees Hannah's burned hands, but quickly smooths it over by explaining that it wasn't because she was repulsed — she'd dreamed about her before. Hannah takes this in stride, and this, coupled with her affinity for secrets, makes me think there's a lot more to this character than meets the eye. I can't wait to find out more.
Hannah shows Nancy the video that was inside the box. Tiffany made it just a few days before she died. She talks about feeling like there's a presence haunting her because of what she had found out. The camera shows the lights above her moving around like there's a ghost, and when the camera pans down for the second time, Lucy Sable is crouched above her.
Yes, this scared the pants off of me. No, I will never forgive them for this.
Hannah says Tiffany was close to finding out about the truth of Lucy Sable's murder, and that she was murdered because she was about to solve the mystery. This certainly doesn't bode well for Nancy, who is also getting closer and closer to the answers she seeks.
In the preview for the next episode, we see just how close she's gotten. Unfortunately, we'll have to wait a few weeks before we learn anything new.
'Nancy Drew' season 1, episode 14 airs on February 26 at 9 p.m. ET on The CW
